As I was reading my work e-mails, basically just news articles about the environment, I decided to post one of the articles here. As I was doing so I realized that for a long time, I have not been doing much with this blog. Considering I pay for this site, I really should fix that. Most of my posts lately have been reposting of articles and short snippets.

The first thing I did was update my blog roll. I updated the links because I changed some of my urls. I still ‘own’ them, but they are inactive. Now you can click the link and go to my other blogs. On this site at least, I need to fix my other blogs. Also, if you have been reading maybe you read my rant about Photobucket wanting to charge me $400 to use my own photos. So I have to fix those photos. I think this blog is done. I also fixed the links to, or I should say, removed the links that are no longer valid on my list of “Interesting People”. Some blogs were gone, some had not been posted to in years etc. Along the way I was re-acquainted with some bloggers that I had forgotten about. There was a reason I linked to their blogs. Good reading.

Finally, I put down the beer, made some coffee and put some gluten-free mac-n-cheese in the oven. That is another thing I am trying to do and something else to write about. Trying to stick to my diet, generally eat healthier and not drink so much. Although I do need to work on Phil’s hat, but it is getting a little late. I think my dinner is about done. Hope to be back soon!

Coffee grounds

When I moved into my apartment I bought a Keurig. I figured it would pay for itself with the money I would save by not stopping at Starbucks every morning. I was buying K-cups for a while, then decided to get a filter. I just started using the filter this week.

The coffee was more then I expected but when I figured out the price per cup, I would save 40¢ a cup. Now I had the problem of what to do with the coffee grounds, since with the K-cups you just toss them out.

After doing some extensive research (I went to ask.com and typed in ‘Coffee grounds down the drain’) I discovered that some people said you shouldn’t dump grounds in the drain, others said they had been doing for years with no problem, a couple of plumbers said, go ahead and dump grounds down the drain (Ka-ching!). I live in an apartment and am probably not the only one drinking coffee so I wouldn’t be the only suspect, but it wouldn’t be very nice.

As for putting them in the garden (did I mention I live in a 4th floor walk-up?) I don’t have a garden, I don’t even have a window box, I don’t even know if my landlord would allow me to have a window box. My boss suggested I save them and put them in a park, but I am a little shy.

However the real problem is how to get them out of the filter without just rinsing them out and down the drain. This morning I ended up putting a paper towel in the sink over the drain and filtering them that way. I will have to settle for keeping as much as I can out of the drain.

Do not lean on the door

There are many rules on the subway. Don’t walk between cars, don’t ride on the outside of the cars, don’t grope your fellow commuters, and don’t lean against the doors.

The MTA says that these rules are for our (the commuters) safety, and I will say that any guy groping me risks his life (or parts of his anatomy) and that could get messy, but consider this scenario.

A fun-sized female (guess who!) gets on an über crowded subway train (#6), she gets a spot too far from a pole to hold onto and the ones overhead are way to high to reach. So what are her choices? She can do a dance in an attempt to keep her balance which makes her look like she is attempting to summon the ancient Mayan god of the underground and puts her at risk for landing in the lap of an octogenarian wearing a Knicks (ew!) hat. Or she can lean against the door and run the risk of falling on the platform when the doors open. Considering the doors don’t open until after the subway stops, for me the risk is minimal.

The only thing left for me to consider is this: Is the humiliation of falling on the platform more or worse then the humiliation of being seen in the lap of a man wearing a Knicks hat?

It’s a personal decision.

Lets blame the victim

Is anyone surprised that a rape victim was blamed for being raped? It’s not surprising to me, in fact I expect it. Don’t you people know that it’s always the woman’s fault!!

It’s not even surprising to me (any more) that they are even blaming the victim when the victim is a child.

Rape of girl, 11, tears apart Texas town as many insist on blaming the victim

“She lied about her age,” Angie Woods told the Houston Chronicle. “Them boys didn’t rape her. She wanted this to happen.”

Speaking for many at the meeting in Cleveland, Tex., Woods insisted she was “not taking nobody’s side.”

“But if she hadn’t put herself in that predicament, this would have never happened,” she said.

The girl’s parents were also blasted by many at the meeting last Thursday for failing to keep track of the girl.

“I also think the parents of that child needs to be held accountable,” said Sheila Hightower, who lives in Cleveland. “You weren’t even aware where she was.”

Here’s a novel idea, why don’t we blame the men for the rape? Why don’t we hold them accountable for their actions? Even if the girl ‘wanted this to happen’ a 16-yr old should know that it is wrong to have sex with an eleven-year old CHILD. Why isn’t anyone blaming his parents for not bringing him up better?

“She’s 11 years old, it shouldn’t have happened,” said Oscar Carter, who has a family connection to a 16-year-old charged in the case. “That’s a child. Somebody should have said what we are doing is wrong.”

Yes someone should, but no one did, instead they recorded it on their cell phone. Which in a twisted turn of events is how the police got involved. Even so, it’s still the woman, er, girl’s fault.

Blogging *FAIL*

Here I am writing a blog called “A commuter’s journal” and I forget to blog about my commute yesterday.

The commute where I got a tweet about a delay on the Hudson Line of about 30 minutes. Not much I could do since I was already on the train, and probably would have gotten on the train anyway since I don’t have any other way to get home. The only explanation was ‘Police Activity’.

As the train was going North, I kept hoping the problem would be cleared up before I got to it, there was no announcement made on the train …. until we got to Cold Spring. Then the conductor announce there was going to be a delay, but then the train started moving and then stopped, dead for 40 minutes.

Today Em sent me a text saying a woman was hit by a train. That would cause a delay.

Even though most of my adventures happen in NYC, and it seems I am there all the time, I actually live in the Hudson Valley. City dwellers say I live upstate, that is a discussion for another time.

There are times I have to amuse myself without going to the city. One of the attraction in Poughkeepsie is the Walkway over the Hudson, it goes from Poughkeepsie to Highland with a ‘park’ at each side. We drove up to Highland because its easier to get to on that side of the river, and you don’t have to pay for parking. It’s 1.25 miles across the river.

It was brutally hot on the bridge and I felt it. My water was gone by the time I got across it, fortunately there are vendors on each side of the bridge selling food, water and other cold drinks, so I got a blue Gatorade and started back. Of course by the time I got back I was once again hot, dehydrated and my head was about to fall off my shoulders. We stopped for ice cream on the way home.

As Em said, now that I have done it, I can say I have done it and I never have to do it again. Em says the only thing left to do before I move to the city is the Rail Trail. Or I can come back one day and do it. I suppose it all depends on how soon I find an apartment.

Evil or just incompetent?

So they sent the wrong phone, and I couldn’t get any help on the phone. So I decided to just send the phone back with a letter stating the problem. While I was debating this in my head I told the boy what happened. He repeated: “Before you go to work for an insurance company you have to sell your soul, only soulless people can work there.”

Since I wanted to give the insurance company time to call me as promised (which they haven’t yet) I waited 48 hours. Then it was Sunday, then it was a holiday. Then I had to go to work so today was the first day I was able to go to the post office. While I was waiting I googled “Asurion Customer Complaints” and read the complaints about Asurion on the Consumer complaints website. It was frightening, since most of the complaints sounded like mine. However the BBB of Tennessee gives them an A+ rating even though they have over 500 complaints against them. Makes me wonder what kind of standards businesses in Tennessee have. All this has me leaning toward evil.

The following is the letter I enclosed with the phone. I will be paying close attention to what happens obviously and keeping you informed. Also obviously.

Asurion Insurance Services, Inc.

RE: Claim ID number: 77707887
Carrier: Verizon Wireless
Phone: (917) 232-1621
Wrong phone shipped in response to claim and no satisfaction from phone call

Dear Adjustor’s Office:

On May 26, 2011 I called your customer service department regarding my Apple iPH432BLK phone that I received that day. The purpose of my call was to inform your company that I received an Apple iPH416BLK instead. After dialing back three times, due to the call being cut off, I was informed that an Insurance Adjustor would be calling me to resolve the issue within 24-48 hours, most likely within 24. I am still waiting for the call.

On May 23, 2011 my phone got broken, I filed a claim online that day and received a message that no 32G were available and it would be backordered.

On May 25, 2011 I received an e-mail stating: Your Apple iPH432BLK from Asurion is now available! On May 26, 2011 I received another e-mail stating the phone had been shipped. The phone arrived that day and when I got home I plugged it into my computer to activate it. When I couldn’t get the phone to activate, I called Verizon customer service, it was then that I noticed the phone was 16G not 32, the Verizon technician verified it. After we got the phone activated he switched me to Asurion so I could report the problem and get it resolved. As mentioned in the first paragraph that has not happened and it is now 5 days later.

Enclosed with this letter is the phone I received and everything that was in the box with it, accessories, papers and return envelope for old phone. I expect to receive either a full refund of the payment I made for a replacement phone or the correct phone. I expect to receive one or the other promptly. I can be reached at either of the phone numbers above or at: suzirow@gmail.com

Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Sincerely,

Since there is a website filled with complaints about Asurion, I don’t feel bad posting this here.

More on Saturday

Saturday was good, and it was beautiful day. I was just so tired yesterday, and I had to write a blog post about the Yankee game and a review post about Yorkville Crêperie where we had lunch Saturday. So I actually did post more then just the pictures Sunday, but I wanted to come back and talk about the day. We started with lunch, during which Em decided she needs to make her nail appointment either early in the day or last thing before we leave. While she was getting her nails done I decided to get a pedicure. I forgot to tell her to use my lotion, an oversight I regretted later, but I’ll get to that later.

After the nail appointment, Em was going to a store she didn’t want me to come in with her (adult toy store). She said she was afraid I would giggle and get us thrown out. Probably would have. So I went to the park (Central Park) to wait for her. While I was waiting there were some men putting on a show. Then Em sent me a text and I went to meet her, then we cut through the park. Spring is in the air, I started sneezing. So we had to leave the park, later as we were walking on the sidewalk past the park, my nose started itching. I hate allergies.

Later when I took my socks and shoes off, I really hated them. I had a rash from the lotion. Nasty red bumps that itched. I don’t normally worry about the lotion, normally I am wearing sandals, but that day I had socks and sneakers on, so the lotion really got rubbed in, and I had shaved my legs in the past week or two. Sometimes, it is really hard being a girl.

And that is all, says she.

On May 4th the 16 anti-choice Democrats joined every House Republican present in passing H.R. 3, the No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act. A chief weapon in the House GOP’s “comprehensive assault” on women this bill proposes some of the most radical and draconian restrictions on women’s rights. Read the complete article here.

The Hyde Amendment prevents some federally funded health-care programs from covering abortions, allowing exemptions in cases of rape and incest, and when the life of the woman is threatened. The new bill changes the wording from rape to “forcible rape”. Opponents of the bill say the wording is to exclude woman who say no but do not physically fight off the perpetrator, women who are drugged or verbally threatened and raped, and minors impregnated by adults. Supporters say that is not true.

According to New York State Law under Sex offenses; lack of consent, the law reads:

1. Whether or not specifically stated, it is an element of every offense defined in this article, except the offense of consensual sodomy, that the sexual act was committed without consent of the victim.
2. Lack of consent results from:
(a) Forcible compulsion; or
(b) Incapacity to consent; or

The law also defines forcible compulsion:

“Forcible compulsion” means to compel by either:
a. use of physical force; or
b. a threat, express or implied, which places a person in fear of immediate death or physical injury to himself, herself or another person, or in fear that he, she or another person will immediately be kidnapped.

Let me explain, if a man comes up to me and points a gun at my head, or to my friend/parent/child and says they are going to shoot me or them unless I have sex with them, and I comply, I am a victim of forcible rape. If it turns out the gun was not loaded, I am still a victim of forcible rape, because I was in fear of immediate death or physical injury to myself or another person. I think most reasonable persons would agree with that statement. Oh wait, this is the GOP not reasonable people, a bunch of fucking morons.

The law of the State of New York seems to support the supporters of this bill, note the following:

Rape in the third degree.
A person is guilty of rape in the third degree when:
1. He or she engages in sexual intercourse with another person who is incapable of consent by reason of some factor other than being less than seventeen years old;
2. Being twenty-one years old or more, he or she engages in sexual intercourse with another person less than seventeen years old; or
3. He or she engages in sexual intercourse with another person without such person`s consent where such lack of consent is by reason of some factor other than incapacity to consent.
Rape in the third degree is a class E felony.

“Forcible compulsion” is included in lack of consent and rape in the third degree is a felony, a crime that will get you time at least a year in state prison and as long as four years (which is a pitiful amount of time but that’s not today’s discussion).

The real problem, as I see it, with this bill and the ‘forcible’ rape wording is the matter of ‘incapacity to consent’

3. A person is deemed incapable of consent when he or she is:
(a) less than seventeen years old; or
(b) mentally disabled; “Mentally disabled” means that a person suffers from a mental disease or defect which renders him or her incapable of appraising the nature of his or her conduct. or
(c) mentally incapacitated; “Mentally incapacitated” means that a person is rendered temporarily incapable of appraising or controlling his conduct owing to the influence of a narcotic or intoxicating substance administered to him without his consent, or to any other act committed upon him without his consent. or
(d) physically helpless; “Physically helpless” means that a person is unconscious or for any other reason is physically unable to communicate unwillingness to an act. or

There is no reason to think that a woman falling into any of the above situations wasn’t really raped, yet it appears the GOP feels this way. The result is a woman who has already been traumatized, perhaps feeling guilty because she DIDN’T fight back or was drugged or drank too much, now has to deal with the GOP violating her and taking away her rights.

This is my main problem with this, because this isn’t just about paying for abortions for rape and incest victims, it the GOP thinking they are the shit and can just take away our rights, preventing women from buying health coverage that covers reproductive health care, including family planning. They want to cut funding to Planned Parenthood. Which is something I have never understood, they don’t want to pay for abortions, they also don’t want to pay for birth control! And while I don’t support Planned Parenthood, I am in full support of women’s rights. I am a single woman, I have to rely on my income to support myself and this is definitely a concern.

While although I’m not advocating we descend on Washington with armored tanks, (although it is a tempting idea just to see them running away after shitting their pants) this is definitely something to keep our eye on.

Osama bin Laden Is Dead, U.S. Official Says

Osama bin Laden has been killed, a United States official said.

President Obama is expected to make an announcement on Sunday night, almost ten years after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

I am watching the President’s announcement now. He is so articulate, he spoke about 9/11/2001, about the war on terrorism, his promise and the events leading up to the assault that killed bin Laden. He ended it with, “May God bless the United States of America.”
