Is my Keurig killing me?

The only appliance in my kitchen is a Keurig. Recently I read an article about the hazards of using a Keurig. After describing how you can never empty the water completely and the sludge and microbes and mold that will grow in it, she went on to talk about the foil that seals the top of the plastic cup and the actual toxicity of the plastic, I was convinced that the mold would kill me, or the foil would give me Alzheimer’s or the plastic would poison me and make life not worth living. Then I read an article that disagreed with the first article, convincing me that my Keurig is not a death ray masquerading as a single cup coffee maker.

Fully realizing that anyone can claim to be an expert and write anything and pretend it is Gospel, after all that is what all those anti-vaccine idiots did to convince gullible parents to not vaccinate their children and endanger us all. By the way, is it possible for an adult to get a pertussis vaccine shot?

It just so happens that I use a filter for my Keurig, so I don’t have the plastic cup and foil lid problems but there is the still the reservoir with its supposed mold growth. Here is where I put my own brain to use. I am extremely allergic to mold. If I was drinking mold everyday, in the form of my morning cup of coffee, I would be sick. But I’m not. So I’m still using my Keurig, and loving it.

Coffee grounds

When I moved into my apartment I bought a Keurig. I figured it would pay for itself with the money I would save by not stopping at Starbucks every morning. I was buying K-cups for a while, then decided to get a filter. I just started using the filter this week.

The coffee was more then I expected but when I figured out the price per cup, I would save 40¢ a cup. Now I had the problem of what to do with the coffee grounds, since with the K-cups you just toss them out.

After doing some extensive research (I went to ask.com and typed in ‘Coffee grounds down the drain’) I discovered that some people said you shouldn’t dump grounds in the drain, others said they had been doing for years with no problem, a couple of plumbers said, go ahead and dump grounds down the drain (Ka-ching!). I live in an apartment and am probably not the only one drinking coffee so I wouldn’t be the only suspect, but it wouldn’t be very nice.

As for putting them in the garden (did I mention I live in a 4th floor walk-up?) I don’t have a garden, I don’t even have a window box, I don’t even know if my landlord would allow me to have a window box. My boss suggested I save them and put them in a park, but I am a little shy.

However the real problem is how to get them out of the filter without just rinsing them out and down the drain. This morning I ended up putting a paper towel in the sink over the drain and filtering them that way. I will have to settle for keeping as much as I can out of the drain.

Starbucks New Logo

Late to the party, that’s me always.

This debate about the new logo was not something that overly concerned me, I am not really a big logo person, I mean I appreciate the importance of a logo, but I don’t get overly attached to them. To be truthful, I wasn’t even sure if they had switched yet because I hadn’t seen it. But here it is on a cup sleeve. I kind of like it, even though its green. The reason I hadn’t noticed it before is because I normally get my coffee in my personal cup. For a variety of reasons.

Besides my belief that it is better for the environment, it also doesn’t burn my hand to hold this cup when its filled with hot coffee and I get a 10¢ discount on my drinks. On a side note, it holds a tall size drink, and yes I have been charged for a grande at times and I like the color. I even have nail polish to match. Seriously, I do.

So, what do you think?

Why?

These are my socks, it may not be visible in this picture, but they are in a plastic resealable bag, like a ziplock bag. Why? Are they afraid the socks will go stale? By the way, that’s a medium in GIRL’S socks.

Another why question I have is, WHY did Splenda® stop making the SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener, Flavors for Coffee in Cinnamon Swirl? It’s available in French Vanilla, Mocha and Hazelnut, but no Cinnamon Swirl. That stuff was great on oatmeal.

When I first had the idea for this post I was also going to include Special K20™ Protein Water Mixes, my favorite is Strawberry Kiwi Protein Water Mix. Besides being yummy it has 5 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber, but as I was wandering around the grocery store, because I didn’t want to say, you can’t find it or they don’t make out without checking it out first, there was the Protein Water Mix in the diet aisle of my local grocery store.

Also on my list was flavored instant coffee, I mean besides Starbucks, can you find it? And there in the coffee aisle was Nescafé® Taster’s Choice® in Vanilla and Hazelnut. I took pictures, but I must have deleted them. These are from the website.

This post was originally conceived as being full of questions about missing grocery items and how it seems that as soon as I start to really love something, it disappears. Instead with a little searching I found one of the items. The cinnamon swirl Splenda® is not even on their website. So there are only two questions. I will have to console myself with a bottle of Stawberry Kiwi Protein Water.
