March 16 was the first day of working remotely, NYS way of saying we are working from home. At first it was until March 30, it is now April 13 and I am still at home.

At first it was, Yay! No getting up early or having to get dressed! And it was fun. Then I started to think about all the things I wasn’t getting done. Not being able to pop by the brewery after work for a pint. The isolation is starting to wear on me.

And then started the petty annoyances, not being able to go anywhere, wanting to sew face masks and not having the supplies and nowhere to buy them. Ordering contacts and not getting them and it’s been a month. Ordering knitting supplies and having the store call me to say they can’t ship them.

Then things started to break, the home button on my iPhone, a knitting needle, and most heart rending of all, my laptop. Yes I am typing this on my iPad with an itty bitty keyboard. At least I have an iPad with a keyboard.

If any thing else breaks, I’m hiding under the bed until July.

Frustration

My plan was to log on tonight and clean up my blogs.

Today I went on WordPress and was appalled at how I had been neglecting my blogs. I started a new one to separate my stories from my crafts (because they are free so why not?) and saw how outdated they were. I was ashamed and decided that tonight I would fix that.

When I got home I …. started knitting. My red hat was just not turning out the way I wanted it to and so I had to start another. Then I opened my laptop and clicked on Chrome …. and nothing happened. An hour later after downloading and trying to reinstall, still nothing. I am fucking pissed.

Right now I am using Opera. But I couldn’t figure out how to transfer my bookmarks and of COURSE, I don’t have the websites names written down.

This is my life.

Babysitting upstate

Not really babysitting since the girl is 25, she had surgery on her sinuses on Monday and so needs someone here to make sure she is o.k. I also helped her with her sinus rinse since I am somewhat of a pro at them. After she did it, her exact words: “Oh my goodness! My nose feels so good!” She is not allowed to actually blow her nose so all the blood and other gunk just sits there. The sinus rinse clears it out as well as moisturizes her mucus membranes. I can imagine it is a wonderful feeling to get all that out of there.

For a while we weren’t able to get online. I thought my old laptop, which is now hers, had the connection to the router here saved, apparently the password has been changed. Then the hotspot on my phone wouldn’t work and I couldn’t connect through her phone’s hotspot. I sent a couple of angry texts to the boy. I always blame him for everything. Now we are online through the router instead of my phone. I just reset it and we were connected and eating up my data, for some reason the hotspot want to use cellular data not the house wifi, yes my phone and iPad were working through the wifi even though I couldn’t connect through my laptop.

After all that, I couldn’t remember what I wanted to write here. It was brilliant though.

The young male cat here has been avoiding me since I got here. For some reason he is afraid of me.

I was banished to the basement, the girl was sleeping where I normally sleep when I come and so I had to sleep in her room. My biggest complaint about sleeping in her room is the mad parrot in her room that hates me. It’s not personal she hates everyone except the girl.

And that is the end of today’s updates. Talk to you soon.

Free Cell Phone and Minutes

Today in the mail I got a notice about ‘The Free Cell Phone & Minutes Program’. I didn’t know such a program existed. If you qualify you can get a free cell phone and 250 free minutes. You may be eligible if you get food stamps, have Medicaid, are Section 8, receive energy assistance, TANF, SSI or free school lunch. I don’t participate in any of those assistance programs, maybe I should pass this on to the homeless guy in front of my building. Oh wait, he already has a cell phone.

At first I didn’t know what to think, I was rather ambivalent. Is a cell phone a necessity? It didn’t use to be, but now it seems like it is. The testimonial included, because there is always a testimonial included is from a elderly woman, disabled and living alone. Since the phone is a cell phone, she can keep it with her and call whenever and wherever she needs help. There are programs to give phones to cab drivers and battered women, so why not the poor and disabled? A decent provision for the poor is the true test of civilization. ~Samuel Johnson. They are not handing out smart phones with unlimited data plans, if you want one you are required to submit proof that you are receiving assistance or your income is below the levels stated and only one phone per household is allowed. I know there are ways around these qualifications, people get arrested for welfare fraud all the time.

Overall, I think its a good idea for people who need assistance to able to contact help. When I was at the hospital they had this program with pendants for people to push if they needed help. The problem was, they only were effective when the person with the pendant was at home. Just because a person is disabled doesn’t mean they are bed-ridden or house bound. Giving cell phones out is an idea whose time has come.

Yes I got an iPhone5, I actually got it two days before I thought I could, so I took it on my vacation. A vacation that I ended up coming home early from because of, well, lets just say craziness. I’m not sure what set off the craziness, it might have been me ……

After Sandy was the nor’easter, then I got asked to help with mapping the houses that needed rebuilding, which lead to overtime, which I haven’t been paid for which means I am now screwed, its complicated and since I came through this storm rather well off I am not going into the details. Lot less heartache for me to deal with that many.

Speaking of heartache, Sandy Hook Elementary School in everyone’s thoughts these days, then I just read about firefighters being shot when responding to a house fire, in a world where a person can shoot 20 5 and 6 year olds should we be surprised that another person would shoot firefighters? The police responded but before the firefighter could get back to fighting the fire it spread to 3 houses and a car. No deaths reported except for the firefighters that got SHOT.

No subway stories today, I haven’t been on it much since I was on vacation where there are no subways, just roads and cars and idiot drivers. Now I am back and have things to do here.

Signing off, back to the subways Thursday.

It was a typical Friday morning on the Green train. Except it wasn’t for me, I wasn’t going to work I was headed to Dutchess County for the weekend. That means I had already been up for hours getting ready. Besides showering I had to clean my apartment before I left. I couldn’t leave my apartment for an extended time with it looking the way it normally does since I might be murdered and the police would come to paw through my stuff and think, “what a slob”.

There I was on the train headed to GCT, yes a rush hour train with a suitcase. I stayed on the 6 because I didn’t want to lug my suitcase from one train to another. The man gets on with in his dress shirt & pants, tie clutching a briefcase and smartphone. As more people got on the train he moved to right in front me, I could see he was playing Monopoly on his phone. He was standing, swaying with the movement of the train, hanging on to the handhold next to me with on hand, in his other hand his briefcase and smartphone touching the screen with his thumb to make his moves. At one point he went to jail. Then the green train got to his stop and he got off.

Bye bye morning entertainment.

What I learned today

I learned how to embed tweets.

Isn’t that cool? As for what I was tweeting, I put paper clips in the olive jar and binder clips in the tea tin. I put labels on them too with my handy dandy label maker.

Yes I didn’t feel like working today.

Support Your Local Library

Two things I love about reading. One is library books. I love them because they are free, so if you get a book that is a total waste of paper, at least you didn’t waste any money. I’ve been fortunate in that every place I have lived there has been a library accessible to me. Even in Buffalo although I abused the privilege and kept the book for a year, and when they sent me the overdue book letter with notice of a fine that was more then the book was worth, I just dropped it in the book return. I can probably never get a library card in Buffalo again. In the Hudson Valley, not only was I within driving distance of 4 libraries. I could request a book from any library in the Hudson Valley Library system.

The other thing I love is my e-reader. It is so convenient to have all my books in one little device I can carry about with me. So imagine my joy when I discovered you could borrow e-books from the NYPL. Yes I was jumping up and down, well I would have been if I had wanted to actually get off my couch. Which I don’t have to do now to get my books from the library.

There is one little problem. The last time I borrowed a book for my e-reader, the quality was not good and I could barely read it. However, Kindle books are available and I have a Kindle app on my iPhone. I went in on NYPL mobile site and requested the book. Not downloadable through their mobile site. I had to go online with my computer and download the book. I wasn’t sure how this would work, but when I clicked to download the book I was redirected to Amazon and the book was sent to my phone. I would be able to read it the next time I synced my Kindle app. Except it didn’t. I synced and no book. However, when I went to Amazon on my phone, the book was available for download in my ‘digital purchases’, so I was able to get it on my phone and read it.

Also, with the Amazon cloud reader I am able to read Kindle books on my computer. How cool is that? I know, I don’t really like reading books on my computer, but the print is so big and at this stage of my life, the bigger print the better.

It’s coming!!

In eleven (11) hours!!

Squeeeeee!!

I had already picked this title and was forming the blog post in my head, when it kind of got ruined.

There is a new Apple store opening in Grand Central Terminal and Em has been going on about how she wants to be there for the opening, to ‘pay homage’ to Steve Jobs. So I had planned to write about how her love for her new friend was making her forget her old friend, since she hadn’t once mentioned him, then today I got an instant message:

Don’t forget to see John for me tomorrow and say hi. I won’t be able to come down again this year. In 2012 the anniversary will fall on a Saturday. I will be there!!!

I had to tell her she ruined my blog post.

However I think I found a way to save it.
