Coffee, tea or hot chocolate?

One day this week a woman got on the train carrying a cup of coffee. Instead of a paper sleeve she had a crocheted one. My first thought was, I want it! My second thought was I can make it myself. I went online to find a pattern, all the patterns I found were crocheted, but I wanted a knit one. I decided it wouldn’t be too hard to figure out how to make one myself.

20130316-134725.jpgAnd here it is, and here are the directions. I used “Caron Simply Soft Party yarn” medium size, gauge is 18 stitches, 24 rows with #8(5mm) US needles=4″x4″ (10 cm). I used size #4 US, (3.5 mm) double pointed needles to make the knitted sleeve shown.

Cast on 34 sts. Join
Rnd 1: K
Rnd 2: Purl all even rows.
Rnd 3: K 17 sts, increase one stitch, K 16 sts, increase one stitch, K1
Rnd 5: K
Rnd 7: K 18 sts, increase one stitch, K 17 sts, increase one stitch, K1
Rnd 9: K
**Rnd 11: K to last stitch, increase one stitch in space before last stitch.
Rnd 12: P
Rnd 13: K
Rnd 14: P

Repeat from ** until sleeve is as long as you want it. Bind off next row, weave yarn ends in.

20130316-135937.jpgAfter finishing it and trying it on the cup to make sure it fit, I did another test. I took the sleeve off the cup and boiled some water, then I made tea in the cup. I put the sleeve on and held the cup, yes I am holding a paper cup with boiling water in it. So not only does it protect my hand, I was also able to get it on the cup when the cup was full. I call that success.

Blurry day

One day last week I went to work without putting my contacts in. I noticed something was wrong when I was standing on the subway platform and couldn’t read the signs. Don’t ask me how I got from my apartment to the subway without noticing nothing was in focus, apparently my brain was in a fog and my legs were on autopilot. After all the subway is always in the same place.

Going shopping after work was an adventure and I discovered advantages and disadvantages to shopping without glasses. The disadvantage was not being able to see down the aisles and having to walk down each one to find canned black beans. The advantage was being able to read the labels without putting on my reading glasses.

Yes I got an iPhone5, I actually got it two days before I thought I could, so I took it on my vacation. A vacation that I ended up coming home early from because of, well, lets just say craziness. I’m not sure what set off the craziness, it might have been me ……

After Sandy was the nor’easter, then I got asked to help with mapping the houses that needed rebuilding, which lead to overtime, which I haven’t been paid for which means I am now screwed, its complicated and since I came through this storm rather well off I am not going into the details. Lot less heartache for me to deal with that many.

Speaking of heartache, Sandy Hook Elementary School in everyone’s thoughts these days, then I just read about firefighters being shot when responding to a house fire, in a world where a person can shoot 20 5 and 6 year olds should we be surprised that another person would shoot firefighters? The police responded but before the firefighter could get back to fighting the fire it spread to 3 houses and a car. No deaths reported except for the firefighters that got SHOT.

No subway stories today, I haven’t been on it much since I was on vacation where there are no subways, just roads and cars and idiot drivers. Now I am back and have things to do here.

Signing off, back to the subways Thursday.

Back to the subway

There are three things I love about the subway, and by love I really mean hate. Actually there are more than three things I hate, but these are kind of always things. Some things just bother and annoy me, these things, when they happen bring the rage to the top of my head. While I have thought about violence as a response to them, my brain reminds me that a) violence is not an appropriate response and b) you worked in prison, and therefore know you don’t want to live there.

The first thing is when the train is crowded and five people get off and ten people get on. So I’m getting squished and people are pushing up against me to move in, normally I’m standing against a metal pole, the metal poles don’t move! So stop pushing on me people because I can’t move my body is squished against this metal pole.

The second thing is, well let me explain first: if you have never been on the NYC subway, the seats are benches. Some are molded so there are ‘seats’ on them, some are just flat. Sometimes a person will sit down, in a space big enough for two people in the middle (I’m not talking about someone big enough to need two spaces, I have no problem with someone taking all the space they NEED) so there is not enough room on either side of them for another person. Most of the time, if you come over and start to sit they will move over, sometimes it leads to the third item in my list.

People who stand in front of an empty space. There is room for someone to sit down, or would be if the person moved over, but they don’t because this other person is just standing there. They aren’t sitting, for whatever reason, but they are blocking others from sitting down! Makes the rage come up to the top of my head. “EXCUSE ME SIR/MA’AM, DO YOU REALIZE YOU ARE BLOCKING A SEAT A LOOK LIKE A GIGANTIC JERK?”

**climbs off soapbox and packs it away for the next time**

This October has quite frankly, been awful. What with a friend’s cancer coming back (after 10+ years cancer-free), another friend going to visit her mother who has Alzheimer’s (and sending me text messages “My mom’s really not doing well.”), the episode on the Evil Green Train that I wrote about before, and another one that I didn’t write about but resulted in me missing a day from work, to my allergies and asthma flaring up (that resulted in $100 pharmacy bill) and my rosacea and eczema coming back (another $90), I want a do-over please. Oh did I mention, the Yankees got swept by the Tigers in the ALCS and THERE WAS A MOUSE UNDER MY STOVE!

New York City

Where the stores are all closed but the sidewalks are crowded.

Where a sweet-voiced girl offers you a ‘song for spare change’.

Where a stranger will pick up your sunglasses for you even when he knows you dropped them because you’re tipsy.

Where the cost of public transportation keeps going up but the ferry is free.

Where the MiLB teams are affiliated with the local MLB teams.

That’s all. For now.

There is now proof that the Green Train is an instrument of Satan. There is a big picture of a girl with butterflies coming out of her mouth and everyone knows butterflies are evil. Well, my best friend will tell you butterflies are evil.

Actually it is just an ad for a movie coming out August 30 called “Possession”. Can you picture the audition for the girl?

‘So can you roll your eyes back into your head? Let’s see. No all the way back, now spit out butterflies!’

What is worse? The two drunk girls dancing and making out or the woman with the large breasts and too small shirt?

Did you think I was going to say ‘green’? Specifically, it is not easy being a single girl living in New York. I don’t know how it is elsewhere. The only other place I lived by myself was Buffalo and I had no problems going out because I never went out because there is nothing to do in Buffalo.

In New York there is plenty to do, especially since in this neighborhood, especially since this is a relatively nice neighborhood. There is a place near hear that has mac-n-cheese, which I am not supposed to have, but sometimes I crave it, so I go there. Actually I used to go there, I will never go there again. Twice I have been harassed there. By the same man, he is a vile nasty creeper, one time he tried to follow me home. The homeless guy helped me out. The second time by what he said I got a very good mental picture of just how big a jerk he is. So this place is scratched off my list of places to go.

The second place I had trouble was at Yankee stadium. I see no reason why I shouldn’t go to games by myself. As far as I know I am not breaking any rules. With all the other fans there, you’re not really all alone anyway. So first this guy starts off by insisting I have to have a boyfriend. No I don’t, what the hell do you care anyway? Nasty little s*** that thinks he’s badass cause he lives in the Bronx. I don’t have a boyfriend, I don’t want a boyfriend, I don’t need a boyfriend. Then he starts asking me all these personal questions, which of course I don’t answer honestly, there is no way I am telling a complete stranger (a creepy one at that) personal details about me. Then he starts keeping track of the ‘lies’. ‘That’s three times you lied to me.’ Then I find out the seats he’s sitting in aren’t even his seats, the person who had those seats came to the game, so he moved. Here’s the kicker, as I’m watching him for the rest of the game, to make sure he doesn’t come near me again and I can tell he has forgotten all about me and our conversation. He ruined my evening, made me a nervous wreck and he is clueless about how his actions affected me.

This isn’t the middle ages is it? I didn’t get suddenly transported back in time to Victorian England. I’m not in one of those bizarre religions that oppress their women am I? So why can’t I go out by myself and have a good time and not have to worry about being harassed? I just want to go to dinner or go to a ballgame and be left alone.

What I learned today

I learned how to embed tweets.

Isn’t that cool? As for what I was tweeting, I put paper clips in the olive jar and binder clips in the tea tin. I put labels on them too with my handy dandy label maker.

Yes I didn’t feel like working today.
