Jewish Museum

StrongLanguageA few blocks from my apartment is the part of 5th Avenue known as “Museum Mile” where you will find such institutions as The Met, Neue Galerie New York, Guggenheim, National Academy Museum, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum and the Jewish Museum. I’ve never been to any of them, until last Saturday when I started looking around on the web for something to do. I remember some friends had mentioned an exhibit with Blah Blah Blah, and I remember seeing it on my runs, so I looked up Jewish Museum to get the hours and rates. Open till 6 and free on Saturday. Well duh, Saturday is the Sabbath. If you don’t know what I mean, do a little research, I’m not your mother. I put on my shoes, grabbed my camera and headed over, I didn’t know if you were allowed to take pictures, but if you could and I didn’t have my camera, I would have been mad. As it turns out, you can take pictures, but not with a flash.

This picture was taken with my iPhone and posted with my check in, which goes to twitter which is how it ended up being noticed by the Jewish Museum. I didn’t tag it because I rarely tag photos from Swarm (click the link to find out what Swarm is).

0539 JM 0719A plaque by the door explains who used to own the building and how it became the Museum, a little bit of history.

Besides the “Strong Language” exhibit that was advertised, the second floor had art exhibits, one was a frame hanging from the ceiling. I thought, if someone wasn’t paying attention and walked into the room, they could get seriously hurt by this. There was a doll house size model of the museum on this floor, complete with miniaturized copies of the exhibits of the museum in it. It was while photographing this that I accidentally pushed the flash button on my camera and found out about the no flash rule.

The top floor has a collection of religious art and artifacts, Israelite and pagan, and a history of how Israelite way of life transformed into Judaism. Despite the fact that some of the things I saw and read conflicted with what I learned when I studied ancient religions, I found this part to be the most interesting. The pictures I took are below, click on any of them to see them full size.

According to a Gallup Poll, nearly 70% of Americans believe in the Devil. Do you? Why or why not? Why do you think 70% of Americans believe as they do on this issue? Do you think this number is higher or lower than other countries in the world? Why? Do you think the devil is behind the choice of this topic?

Yes I believe in the Devil, I believe he is real, a wicked spirit creature. I believe because I am a religious person and believe what is taught in the Bible. The Bible talks about the Devil as a real spirit person. I am not sure about the number of Americans, I think many say they believe in the Devil when in reality they believe more in an evil force that causes bad things to happen.

As to whether or not the number of people is greater or less in other countries, that depends on the country. I think that in some countries the number of people who believe in the devil is much higher, there again it would depend on the religious demographics in the country.

Do I think the Devil is behind the choice of this topic? Well, I do believe that the Devil is the ruler of this world, but I don’t think he is behind every little thing that happens. I think he has influence over people,so maybe ….

Weather today

I really don’t know why I don’t blog on the weekend, but I don’t, I just jot everything down Monday then in the evening I reorganize and add stuff when I get online.

Friday night was the DCC concert, I didn’t go, I got a text from Tigger saying 9D was backed up so I went to Allsport instead. While M. Stitch, Tigger and Gwen were at the concert, D signed up for Netflix.

Saturday after bookstudy Gwen had a driving lesson, around the block in the development then I drove to riverside park and Gwen drove from the park to the train station, back to the park and to the train station again, she only almost hit a curb once. After that I went to Allsport. Then Sunday I took Tigger to get a bluetooth. He really likes it. I walked to Ron’s, halfway there I realized I had left my money at home, so I walked on to Main Street to get some from the bank. Netflix is great.

After a semi-gorgeous weekend it is cold, damp, gray & windy this a.m. I took a beating on the way in from the subway to my office. And it must have rained a lot somewhere because the hudson was overflowing its banks into the train parking lot. The same parking lot Gwen was practicing her driving in Saturday.

Updating & checking

So I hope this goes through. I am using my phone to access Hotmail. I hope v-cast is right so I don’t get charged for this.

Saturday was the SPCA dog parade. The middle school marching band was there so we were there.

Sunday was sad. In January no more separate bookstudy, it is going to be before the ministry school. M said they had to decide if they should raise Bethelites allowances or reduce their expenses. They decided to reduce expenses!

It is raining today and l missed the early train. Tigger has already sent me a text asking for cinnamon. I bought him some at the deli. I sent him a text message saying I bought some cinnamon for you. I got the regular kind for you at the store with the dusty tins.

I was down this morning, don’t know how much I haven’t tracked it yet. I am getting back into my weight training, that is what really makes the difference for me.

I went to Allsport this evening. D and the boys (the two youngest) went to play racquetball. The texts Tigger sent me seem to indicate they had a good time. He said D was going to get a membership so they would be there more often.

I did some more typing on my other blog. I am describing the craft items and how I made them, where I got the ideas etc.

I am getting ready for bed and am starting to get stomach ache. Probably from what I am eating. I am going to drink a big glass of water and then go to bed. It will be a good thing to go to sleep before midnight.

Memorial Notes

Saturday 22 March 2008
7 congregation at the Newburgh Assembly Hall
Talk given by C.O. Kenneth Hague

(Luke 22:19-20) Also, he took a loaf, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them, saying: “This means my body which is to be given in your behalf. Keep doing this in remembrance of me.” Also, the cup in the same way after they had the evening meal, he saying: “This cup means the new covenant by virtue of my blood, which is to be poured out in your behalf.
(Romans 6:23) For the wages sin pays is death, but the gift God gives is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord. Adam threw away his wonderful change for perfect life forever for him and his offspring and instead has left us an inheritance of sin, which leads to death. But God has given us a wonderful gift, everlasting life by Christ through the ransom.
Think of a factory with a corrupt manager, everyone suffers because of his malfeasance, but a wealth benefactor restores the factory and all benefit.
(John 3:16) “For God loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten Son, in order that everyone exercising faith in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life. Action is required on our part.
(James 2:24) You see that a man is to be declared righteous by works, and not by faith alone.
(James 2:26) Indeed, as the body without spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
(Revelation 14:1) And I saw, and, look! the Lamb standing upon the Mount Zion, and with him a hundred and forty-four thousand having his name and the name of his Father written on their foreheads. Last year at the memorial, 17,672,443 attended, only 9,105 partook, there are very few of the 144,000 left on earth.
(Revelation 5:10) and you made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God, and they are to rule as kings over the earth.”
(Romans 8:16-17) The spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are God’s children. If, then, we are children, we are also heirs: heirs indeed of God, but joint heirs with Christ, provided we suffer together that we may also be glorified together. God’s holy spirit identifies those with the heavenly hope.
(Revelation 14:4) These are the ones that did not defile themselves with women; in fact, they are virgins. These are the ones that keep following the Lamb no matter where he goes. These were bought from among mankind as firstfruits to God and to the Lamb, They have not defiled themselves with false religion, and they are firstfruits, there will be more.
(John 10:16) “And I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; those also I must bring, and they will listen to my voice, and they will become one flock, one shepherd.
(Isaiah 65:21-23) And they will certainly build houses and have occupancy; and they will certainly plant vineyards and eat their fruitage. They will not build and someone else have occupancy; they will not plant and someone else do the eating. For like the days of a tree will the days of my people be; and the work of their own hands my chosen ones will use to the full. They will not toil for nothing, nor will they bring to birth for disturbance; because they are the offspring made up of the blessed ones of Jehovah, and their descendants with them. They see good results.
(1 Corinthians 11:23-24) For I received from the Lord that which I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was going to be handed over took a loaf and, after giving thanks, he broke it and said: “This means my body which is in your behalf. Keep doing this in remembrance of me.” The unleavened bread stands for Jesus perfect body.
(1 Corinthians 11:25) He did likewise respecting the cup also, after he had the evening meal, saying: “This cup means the new covenant by virtue of my blood. Keep doing this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” Red wine symbol of Christ’s blood. Plain red wine, not fortified, like brandy, nothing added, like spices.
How do we show our appreciation?
(Matthew 11:28) Come to me, all you who are toiling and loaded down, and I will refresh you. Invitation from Jesus.
Who is Qualified to Rule Mankind? Special talk in April
(Hebrews 10:25) not forsaking the gathering of ourselves together, as some have the custom, but encouraging one another, and all the more so as you behold the day drawing near. Regularly gather with our brothers.

How Now Brown Cow.

I get tired sometimes of trying to think of titles for my posts. I went to the gym today, well M and I went to the gym. Then we went to Panera for hot cocoa. We also went out in service today. Only for 30 minutes. If I made New Years Resolutions I would make one to go out in service every month.

This evening when I came downstairs to go to bed my phone starting going off. M, Tigger and Tigger(with D’s phone) sent me text messages all at once. They thought it was hilarious. They also blamed it on Sassy.

Well, now I am going to bed.

Weather

We had a snow storm Thursday. We had no meeting because of the Circuit Assembly this weekend. Well, there is a storm forecast for tonight into tomorrow, so they decided to not have tomorrows program, we are going next week. Unless we get another storm.

Thursday they let us go home early. There was a lot of snow by the time I got home, I had to drive really slow on the road, then I got stuck in the driveway, like always.

I went up to the Bed and Bath store to get a heating pack, it is very cold out. I got a big one and it made my shoulder feel so much better. I was afraid it would smell funny but it is not bad. I have to go upstairs now so I can have some hot cocoa.

I was going to say more but I can’t remember, I need to start taking notes on my life.

So I just retook the Tickle IQ test. It was the same as last time.
