Another Saturday at play

In the city today, Em is in Vermont so I was all alone, I was going to tweet to see if any of my followers was watching the game in the city and could I join them, then I checked the game time, 9:00 p.m. There went that idea. Then I got in a mini fight with Em (she later blamed it on her husband, I’m cool with that). While in the city I got a Russell Martin shirt for Em’s husband and a shirt with “27 reasons not to be Red Sox fan” for Tuesday’s game.

Ashley checked my ear for me, the new piercing is healing fine and she told me what to do with the one that was bleeding. I was planning on going for tea and to a store I had a groupon for. My mood was entirely ruined for that before I left Ashley’s so I left NoHo and headed up to Grand Central Terminal.

Thinking I should come home I asked Stitch why he told his mom I was mad at them. He said he didn’t and then said “You don’t have to come home.” I was already up at Grand Central so I couldn’t go to the clothing store I had a Groupon for so I just started walking. I found a street fair and walked the whole length of it and back. I bought a hat, a necklace, some magnets, earrings and a watch that didn’t work. Then I stopped at a bar to have a beer, or two. I might go back there sometime if I need to watch the game when I’m in the city.

By the time I got home, the game was 20 minutes old. Big Stoppa was pitching. I thought Em wanted me to tweet game details, then she said she was following it on her iPad. So what the heck did she need me for? So I just tweeted spectacular facts about the game. But I think she didn’t get them because of all the other tweets she was getting.

Topic #144:

Make a top ten list of things to do this summer. And if you are somewhere in the world where the seasons are different, make a top ten list of things you want to do next season.

1. Go to all the Saturday Yankee Games.
2. Go see the Staten Island Yankees play at Dutchess Stadium.
3. Start looking at apartments in Manhattan.
4. Read more books.
5. Get my Beth Israel hospital bill settled.
6. Get my insurance claim with EVIL Asurion settled.
7. Lose 5 pounds.
8. Exercise more
9. Go swimming.
10. Post everyday.

I noticed that this is not a ‘things you want to get done’ or goals, just things to do this summer. More on the line of summer activities. At least that is how I took it.

Random thoughts

As I wait for my replacement iPhone I think maybe I shouldn’t have nice things. I haven’t even paid the bill for my phone and I dropped it and shattered the screen. Now I am thinking of what I should have done ….

My Palm Pre Plus was less then a week old the first time I dropped it. I also dropped it at Yankee Stadium when Swisher hit a home run.

I bought this really pretty wallet, it wouldn’t fit in my purse. So I bought a new purse, yesterday the strap broke and I had to throw it out, then scrounge around for a wallet that would fit in my purse. Now my wallet doesn’t match my purse.

If I didn’t have asthma and allergies I would need to carry emergency medicine and I could carry a smaller purse.

Speaking of asthma, I am still coughing with that nasty dry throat hurting cough. The one that wears me out and makes me cranky.

And that is all, says she.

Ah spring

That magical time of year when the days get longer and warmer, or at least are supposed to, green grass and flowers start to stick their little plant heads above ground and produce pollen. Sales of Benadryl skyrocket and allergists start to really earn money. Those of us with asthma triggered by our allergies stand around coughing into our jacket cuffs hoping the full blown asthma attack holds off until we find our inhalers, while onlookers wonder if we have the plague.

Yes spring. Spring can bite me.

More on Saturday

Saturday was good, and it was beautiful day. I was just so tired yesterday, and I had to write a blog post about the Yankee game and a review post about Yorkville Crêperie where we had lunch Saturday. So I actually did post more then just the pictures Sunday, but I wanted to come back and talk about the day. We started with lunch, during which Em decided she needs to make her nail appointment either early in the day or last thing before we leave. While she was getting her nails done I decided to get a pedicure. I forgot to tell her to use my lotion, an oversight I regretted later, but I’ll get to that later.

After the nail appointment, Em was going to a store she didn’t want me to come in with her (adult toy store). She said she was afraid I would giggle and get us thrown out. Probably would have. So I went to the park (Central Park) to wait for her. While I was waiting there were some men putting on a show. Then Em sent me a text and I went to meet her, then we cut through the park. Spring is in the air, I started sneezing. So we had to leave the park, later as we were walking on the sidewalk past the park, my nose started itching. I hate allergies.

Later when I took my socks and shoes off, I really hated them. I had a rash from the lotion. Nasty red bumps that itched. I don’t normally worry about the lotion, normally I am wearing sandals, but that day I had socks and sneakers on, so the lotion really got rubbed in, and I had shaved my legs in the past week or two. Sometimes, it is really hard being a girl.

And that is all, says she.

On May 4th the 16 anti-choice Democrats joined every House Republican present in passing H.R. 3, the No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act. A chief weapon in the House GOP’s “comprehensive assault” on women this bill proposes some of the most radical and draconian restrictions on women’s rights. Read the complete article here.

The Hyde Amendment prevents some federally funded health-care programs from covering abortions, allowing exemptions in cases of rape and incest, and when the life of the woman is threatened. The new bill changes the wording from rape to “forcible rape”. Opponents of the bill say the wording is to exclude woman who say no but do not physically fight off the perpetrator, women who are drugged or verbally threatened and raped, and minors impregnated by adults. Supporters say that is not true.

According to New York State Law under Sex offenses; lack of consent, the law reads:

1. Whether or not specifically stated, it is an element of every offense defined in this article, except the offense of consensual sodomy, that the sexual act was committed without consent of the victim.
2. Lack of consent results from:
(a) Forcible compulsion; or
(b) Incapacity to consent; or

The law also defines forcible compulsion:

“Forcible compulsion” means to compel by either:
a. use of physical force; or
b. a threat, express or implied, which places a person in fear of immediate death or physical injury to himself, herself or another person, or in fear that he, she or another person will immediately be kidnapped.

Let me explain, if a man comes up to me and points a gun at my head, or to my friend/parent/child and says they are going to shoot me or them unless I have sex with them, and I comply, I am a victim of forcible rape. If it turns out the gun was not loaded, I am still a victim of forcible rape, because I was in fear of immediate death or physical injury to myself or another person. I think most reasonable persons would agree with that statement. Oh wait, this is the GOP not reasonable people, a bunch of fucking morons.

The law of the State of New York seems to support the supporters of this bill, note the following:

Rape in the third degree.
A person is guilty of rape in the third degree when:
1. He or she engages in sexual intercourse with another person who is incapable of consent by reason of some factor other than being less than seventeen years old;
2. Being twenty-one years old or more, he or she engages in sexual intercourse with another person less than seventeen years old; or
3. He or she engages in sexual intercourse with another person without such person`s consent where such lack of consent is by reason of some factor other than incapacity to consent.
Rape in the third degree is a class E felony.

“Forcible compulsion” is included in lack of consent and rape in the third degree is a felony, a crime that will get you time at least a year in state prison and as long as four years (which is a pitiful amount of time but that’s not today’s discussion).

The real problem, as I see it, with this bill and the ‘forcible’ rape wording is the matter of ‘incapacity to consent’

3. A person is deemed incapable of consent when he or she is:
(a) less than seventeen years old; or
(b) mentally disabled; “Mentally disabled” means that a person suffers from a mental disease or defect which renders him or her incapable of appraising the nature of his or her conduct. or
(c) mentally incapacitated; “Mentally incapacitated” means that a person is rendered temporarily incapable of appraising or controlling his conduct owing to the influence of a narcotic or intoxicating substance administered to him without his consent, or to any other act committed upon him without his consent. or
(d) physically helpless; “Physically helpless” means that a person is unconscious or for any other reason is physically unable to communicate unwillingness to an act. or

There is no reason to think that a woman falling into any of the above situations wasn’t really raped, yet it appears the GOP feels this way. The result is a woman who has already been traumatized, perhaps feeling guilty because she DIDN’T fight back or was drugged or drank too much, now has to deal with the GOP violating her and taking away her rights.

This is my main problem with this, because this isn’t just about paying for abortions for rape and incest victims, it the GOP thinking they are the shit and can just take away our rights, preventing women from buying health coverage that covers reproductive health care, including family planning. They want to cut funding to Planned Parenthood. Which is something I have never understood, they don’t want to pay for abortions, they also don’t want to pay for birth control! And while I don’t support Planned Parenthood, I am in full support of women’s rights. I am a single woman, I have to rely on my income to support myself and this is definitely a concern.

While although I’m not advocating we descend on Washington with armored tanks, (although it is a tempting idea just to see them running away after shitting their pants) this is definitely something to keep our eye on.

Custom food

In Manhattan there are places to get custom salads, where you pick what’s on the salad. Since I work in Queens though, I can’t have lunch at any of these places.

The deli near my office has always had pre-made salads, that I would get and pick out what I didn’t like. I say would because this week I went to my deli and as I was wandering around trying to decide what to get I noticed the deli guy behind the plexiglas putting vegetables in a bowl of lettuce.

There on top of the counter was a sign: pick your lettuce, pick 5 items, pick your dressing. Since I didn’t get dressing, he gave me a 6th item. Happiness. It was also big enough to eat half and save half.

Finally success

Ever go to the store and on the way home realize you forgot something? The last 6 trips to Target that has happened to me. It was the same item, dental floss. I even put it in my iPod touch and I still forgot.

Today after church Sarah and I ran some errands. First to the bank, then to Bank Sq to get coffee, where their motto is, life is too short to drink bad coffee. Then to Target, and this time I remembered the dental floss, but all they had was mint flavored. I don’t like mint. And I hate when I have to go to two stores to get one item. But that is what I had to do. Fortunately, the second store I went to had non-mint flavored dental floss.

So that was my day today. How was your day?

This Saturday started with me fulfilling an obligation first thing in the morning. Then it was off to the city. Em and I had appointments for a massage at the Russian spa I really like. It was the first time for Em and the second time for me. We skipped the sauna because Em didn’t want her makeup all over her face. There are three things I have learned about this spa:

  1. The robes are not one size fits all,
  2. The lockers are not designed for 5 ft tall people.
  3. The twisty things that the locker keys are on do not make good ponytail holders.

Other than those three things, I loved the massage. So did Em, well she says she always loves getting a massage and here is not the best massage she has had. I have also decided that a shot of vodka at 4:00 pm after just having a handful of Cheerios and a doughnut all day is not a good idea.

Then it was time for Em to get her nails done, and I was going to go to Starbucks to have a snack and go online, but Em wanted to see if The Yankee store had and Russell Martin shirts. I knew they wouldn’t, but I went there anyway. This time I didn’t buy anything, no one seemed to mind that I was walking around taking pictures in the store.

For dinner we went back to BonChon chicken. This time we got just pot stickers and salad. But since it was dinnertime, there were a lot more pot stickers per order. So we had some to bring home for Stitch. Good times.

Oh, and the Yankees beat the Red Sox.

My day off

As mentioned before, I have every other Wednesday off, as I was eating my cereal this morning, and Gwen was talking to me, I kept thinking how much nicer it would be if I could get a day off and be alone. Not that I don’t like her, I just sometimes prefer to be alone. Of course after I move, I will be spending almost all my mornings alone.

Gwen and I were supposed to do something this morning but she didn’t feel well so we both went back to bed. There it was quiet. Until Gwen came downstairs and started doing her laundry, she is excited for tomorrow, that is why she is washing clothes.

Then we went shopping, she said she needed tops, we found some great sales, when it was rung up, the amount she spent and the amount she saved was 40¢ different. I didn’t save as much on mine. Then Fred called because he wanted to be picked up, he was upset I wasn’t home, but agreed to meet at Ron’s (please follow), since I had to go back there to get my sunglasses.

Then home, and I don’t know why, but lately everything I eat is making me sick.

Well, I have to go now. I might be back for more randomness.
