Back to the subway

There are three things I love about the subway, and by love I really mean hate. Actually there are more than three things I hate, but these are kind of always things. Some things just bother and annoy me, these things, when they happen bring the rage to the top of my head. While I have thought about violence as a response to them, my brain reminds me that a) violence is not an appropriate response and b) you worked in prison, and therefore know you don’t want to live there.

The first thing is when the train is crowded and five people get off and ten people get on. So I’m getting squished and people are pushing up against me to move in, normally I’m standing against a metal pole, the metal poles don’t move! So stop pushing on me people because I can’t move my body is squished against this metal pole.

The second thing is, well let me explain first: if you have never been on the NYC subway, the seats are benches. Some are molded so there are ‘seats’ on them, some are just flat. Sometimes a person will sit down, in a space big enough for two people in the middle (I’m not talking about someone big enough to need two spaces, I have no problem with someone taking all the space they NEED) so there is not enough room on either side of them for another person. Most of the time, if you come over and start to sit they will move over, sometimes it leads to the third item in my list.

People who stand in front of an empty space. There is room for someone to sit down, or would be if the person moved over, but they don’t because this other person is just standing there. They aren’t sitting, for whatever reason, but they are blocking others from sitting down! Makes the rage come up to the top of my head. “EXCUSE ME SIR/MA’AM, DO YOU REALIZE YOU ARE BLOCKING A SEAT A LOOK LIKE A GIGANTIC JERK?”

**climbs off soapbox and packs it away for the next time**

The subway line from hell

What do you think, should I rename my blog to the above? How about, “Perils of the #6 train” or “The #6 is so effed up”.

Monday I took the bus, it was an experiment. Yesterday I took the bus again, this time out of desperation.

When I got to the subway I was surprised to see my co-worker and neighbor Mel waiting for the train. I found out the reason was because the trains that had come before were so packed she hadn’t got on. So we waiting, every train that came by was packed. The whole train.

Finally out of frustration and desperation we took the bus. We got off at 59th to see if the subway was any better, it wasn’t. Two trains went by and every car was packed to the doors. There was no way I was getting on any of those trains. We left the subway and caught another bus. This time we rode all the way to GCT.

To get to the #7 one has to walk to the #6 train platform and take the stairs down. As we were walking across the platform for the uptown #6 train, Mel indicated the other platform, the one for the downtown trains. It was packed with people. I have never seen that many people on the platform. I wanted to yell at them, “Take the bus!”

I took me 1:45 to get to work. Next week, I leave at 7, everyday.

My great idea

This morning I had a great idea, I thought. It came to me when I looked out my window and saw the bus. My thought was that instead of taking the #6 train and being smooshed all the way to Grand Central, I could take the bus down Second Ave and then walk to Grand Central.

First I checked to make sure the bus went all the way to Grand Central, then I went to the bus stop since I knew where it was a couple of blocks from my apartment. It was freezing cold and pretty soon I saw the bus, and it drove right past the stop, it was in the middle lane too. About 4 or 5 buses drove by without stopping and by this time it was too late to walk to the #6 train.

Travel time was about the same, but waiting 20 minutes and freezing, I would rather be squished on the subway.

Do not lean on the door

There are many rules on the subway. Don’t walk between cars, don’t ride on the outside of the cars, don’t grope your fellow commuters, and don’t lean against the doors.

The MTA says that these rules are for our (the commuters) safety, and I will say that any guy groping me risks his life (or parts of his anatomy) and that could get messy, but consider this scenario.

A fun-sized female (guess who!) gets on an über crowded subway train (#6), she gets a spot too far from a pole to hold onto and the ones overhead are way to high to reach. So what are her choices? She can do a dance in an attempt to keep her balance which makes her look like she is attempting to summon the ancient Mayan god of the underground and puts her at risk for landing in the lap of an octogenarian wearing a Knicks (ew!) hat. Or she can lean against the door and run the risk of falling on the platform when the doors open. Considering the doors don’t open until after the subway stops, for me the risk is minimal.

The only thing left for me to consider is this: Is the humiliation of falling on the platform more or worse then the humiliation of being seen in the lap of a man wearing a Knicks hat?

It’s a personal decision.

Metro North ~ sigh ~

As I was waiting for the train this morning, I suddenly realized that after I move, I will be able to leave for work an hour later then I am currently.

Going home, having to change trains, which I knew would happen because they put us on an all electric train, and then a child screaming, which normally doesn’t bother me but the electric trains make me motion sick, I thought, this also will not happen.

So I wonder, all these years I have not minded commuting by MetroNorth. Now all of a sudden, it starts to annoy me.

Blogging *FAIL*

Here I am writing a blog called “A commuter’s journal” and I forget to blog about my commute yesterday.

The commute where I got a tweet about a delay on the Hudson Line of about 30 minutes. Not much I could do since I was already on the train, and probably would have gotten on the train anyway since I don’t have any other way to get home. The only explanation was ‘Police Activity’.

As the train was going North, I kept hoping the problem would be cleared up before I got to it, there was no announcement made on the train …. until we got to Cold Spring. Then the conductor announce there was going to be a delay, but then the train started moving and then stopped, dead for 40 minutes.

Today Em sent me a text saying a woman was hit by a train. That would cause a delay.

I’m back!!

So once again I have become negligent in my blogging and am having to play catch up. It won’t be easy this weekend since I am going to see Green Lantern with Gwen on Friday, going to NYC on Saturday with Em and then going to see the Staten Island Yankees on Monday. Plus the Yankees have no off days coming up.

Tonight I had to type posts on about 4 games that I was behind. Now that I’m caught up there,

My phone is here, I spent all last evening getting my apps loaded and my books downloaded and my music synced. Then I forgot it at home when I went to work. Not only that, I twisted my ankle running to catch the train. I didn’t really hurt my ankle, just scraped the side of it with the strap on my shoe.

Yesterday morning my right eye was completely blood shot. It is still a little bit red but I can’t wear my contacts. Tomorrow I am wearing mascara and eyeliner. Mainly because I don’t think make-up is the cause of this.

Not much else to say. I think I will look a the pictures on my camera to make up for the missing posts.

Work is just blahhhhhhhhh

This morning I overslept. Not bad, but I was 30 minutes late. I really didn’t want to go into work, but I dragged myself out of bed and came in. I had two meetings today, one I forgot about until I got in and saw the e-mail. Our new regional director wants to get to know everyone. I believe the polite expression is, stuff and bother. Anyway, since I had to spend time in meetings I didn’t get to the work that piled up that lately I have been able to start whittling away at.

Also, I was updating one of my reports, and saving it to the H drive like I have been instructed, and it wouldn’t save. Then I got an error and the document closed, without my changes being saved. [insert bad word here] So when I went to the first meeting I was cranky, and then they were were just talking and talking and my head started to hurt.

And Asurion called, to see if I was enjoying my new replacement phone. So I called them and told them, No I’m not I had to return it to you, I included a letter with the details because no one returned my call. I didn’t tell them, you better get your shit together because I am ****ing angry, I am keeping my eye on you, like Sting.

This morning

Was educational. I learned that Bruno Mars is a cutie-pie. And I learned, the length of time it takes to get from GCT to LIC is the same as the time it takes to listen to every Beatles song on my iPod.

Which means I need to buy more Beatles music.

The day after

Sunday night the announcement was made by President Barak Obama that Osama bin Laden was dead. There was much speculation about possible retaliation, comments that this didn’t mean the end of the war or hostilities. The Daily Post even posted this question:

According to reports yesterday, Osama bin Laden was killed. What will change, for you, for the U.S., for the world, now that Osama is gone? Or it will it not have much of an effect at all?

Monday morning I took the train into Grand Central Terminal. Like I’ve been doing the past 5-½ years I wondered if this morning would be any different. The mood on the train was normal. It wasn’t my normal train since I had overslept, but I have taken the train occasionally. We got off the train and headed up the ramp, so far it was a normal day. Then at the top of the step were two police officers. That is not usual, then inside the doors two more, then a K-9 officer, they weren’t being intrusive, just standing around watching every one. There were just a lot more then normal.

Do I think this will change things in the U.S. and abroad? No not really, terrorism is still out there, there is the chance of retaliation that we need to be aware of, if the terrorist leaders have done their job correctly, teaching that this is a holy war not a war for the leaders, I fully expect someone to step up and take over where Osama left off.

And that is all, says she.
