Should you help homeless people? Whether you should or not, I have. I have donated to coats to the homeless and whenever I see the guys collecting for the outreach services that help the homeless I put money in if I can get to my wallet easily. Sometimes, I will put dollars in my pocket just so I can donate. Especially in the winter.
So while I help them, I don’t give them the money directly. But I do give money to programs that help them.
There are many reasons people may end up homeless and some of the homeless are children, that is my reason for helping.
I love the randomness of your “Bella’s life” page! I love reading random facts about people, it makes it so fun.
I also admire you for donating money to groups that help the homeless and that you carry dollars in your pocket in the winter. Respect to you for that. I am always skeptical about these groups however. How do you really know where the money is going? Is your money REALLY going to the homeless? I hate that these doubts even have to pass through my mind, but there are a lot of selfish, cold people out there, unfortunately.
Thanks for the nice comments. I am a very random person.
There certainly are many selfish and greedy in the world, that is why I am careful who I give my money to.
I debate with myself all the time about whether or not it is a good idea to give money to people who are homeless. Back and forth in my head. Many of my first jobs as a social worker were working with the homeless population…homeless shelters, day centers and doing street outreach. I used to feel really strongly that money should be given to organizations and not to people, since rarely if at all is any of the money given to people on the street go to anything healthy or productive.
But if you ask me the last time I gave someone money on the street…I think it was late April or early May. I knew the money was probably going to no good, but in the end…I considered it an act of human kindness. Sometimes I get overwhelmed with how homeless people are invisible especially in cities. No one looks them in the eye. So, the dollar or change I can drop in a cup is more of recognizing that the person exists….no matter how stupid or silly or naive it sounds. I smile, say hello and wish that they have a nice day. Sure, I could do that without giving away any money, but in the end…I figure that no matter what they spend the money on, they probably need it more than I do.
I think it’s fantastic that you donate to causes that help those who find themselves homeless. Every dollar, every cent…helps.
Hugs,
