More about earrings

I can’t help it, I just ♥ earrings. Saturday was the first time I wore different earrings in my second pierced hole in my ear. I wore my Amethyst hearts in the first hole and my square Amethyst earrings on the French wires for the second. When I was taking the piercing earrings out, one of the backs came apart, they are the backs with a metal center and plastic around it. Anyway, there was some brown stuff too, couldn’t tell what it was though. Anyway, I decided that instead of putting those earrings back in I would put in my little hoops. The problem was, I couldn’t get the little hoops to close.

Sunday I wore my other hoops in the second hole, a plain gold post in the first and the piercing stud in the third. I decided to try to see if Zales had any little hoops for a reasonable price. I found these wee tiny hoops with butterflies on them. Can you see the butterflies? Probably not. I can’t see them and I know they are there! They are just the size I was looking for, and they are very pretty.

Here is better picture of the earrings. I took it from the website. There was another pair of hoops that I actually liked better, but the store only had white gold in stock. I will be ordering them from the website in yellow gold. I had a moment of concern, when I got in my car I took the hoops I was wearing out to put these in and when I took the right earring out, my ear hurt! When I took the left earring out there was gunk on the post. So I am back to vigilantly cleaning my ears with the sea salt. I am planning on putting the other hoops in my third piercing hole, I think it will be easier to keep the ears clean with hoops.

August is peak water use season and with a few simple tips from EPA’s WaterSense program homeowners can save water and as much as $110 annually on their water bills.

“Peak water use can be expensive, taxes local water systems, and threatens future water supply and quality,” said Peter S. Silva, EPA’s Assistant Administrator for Water. “A few simple changes can help consumers reduce their water bills, and in turn, save them money.”

On average, an American household uses about 260 gallons per day, but this amount climbs to around 1,000 gallons per day during peak water use season with some households using as much as 3,000 gallons a day.

Here are some tips to help reduce water use:

  • Water yards only when needed.
  • Consider using WaterSense labeled toilets, faucets and faucet accessories, which use at least 20 percent less water and can save $60 per year.
  • Water landscapes only when needed. Watering in the very early morning or evening is best.
  • Wash only full loads of laundry and dishes, and scrape dishes instead of rinsing when loading the dishwasher.
  • For summer refreshment, keep a pitcher of water in the fridge instead of running the tap until it is cold.
  • Put your favorite handyperson to work fixing leaks around the home, which can waste about 200 gallons per week. Fixing leaks can add up to about $50 in utility bill savings annually.

In 2008 alone, WaterSense labeled toilets, faucets, and faucet accessories helped Americans save more than 9.3 billion gallons of water and realize more than $55 million in savings on water and sewer bills. That is enough water to supply 100,000 average households for a year.

WaterSense is a partnership program sponsored by EPA to protect the future of our nation’s water supply by promoting and enhancing the market for water-efficient products and services.

>Saturday

>Yes, Em and I went to the city Saturday. But to understand what happened, I have to take you back to Friday night. Friday I went to get my nails done. Em asked me to find out when her appointment was on Saturday. After I asked, Esther asked if I was coming too, when I said yes, she asked if I was going to get a pedicure, I said, Maybe. The owner came back to the table next to us and Esther told her I was going to get a pedicure when Em came in for her manicure! I was just kind of, well I didn’t really say that, **sigh**. When I told Em, she just kind of laughed and said, “It is so hard to say no to them.”

I wore my new sandals Saturday, it was ok, I have kind of broken them in. When they asked me to pick a color, I tried to pick a color as close to the color of the shoes as possible. I know they don’t look the same, I think it is because the nails are shiny and the sandals aren’t. We left the nail salon and headed down Broadway to Marie Tash so Em could see about the ring she is wanting to get. I also needed to get my piercing checked. We were early so on the way we stopped at the Strand. To get out of the heat and kill some time. Of course I asked about the True Crime section, which I was told is in the Basement. Of course. Well with 18 miles of book shelves, some had to go to the basement didn’t they? So I went downstairs and started looking, couldn’t find them, couldn’t find any signs for them either. Finally I asked someone and he took me way back into this corner and there tucked between ‘Journalism’ and ‘Law Inforcement’, was True Crime. It was actually a decent sized selection. Of course, I never remember the authors of the books I want so I was having to read the titles of all the books, I found Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit by Mark Olshaker (Author) and John E. Douglas for $7.00, hardbound, originally $25.00, so I bought it. About the time that I found it, Em sent me a text saying she was ready to leave.

We continued on to Maria Tash and got there just as they were opening. Em talked to the sales person about what she wanted. She didn’t have anything done then but now knows when to come back for what she wants. I had them check my piercings, which they said look like they are heeling like they should. I asked about the bleeding, they weren’t concerned. I also asked about a 4th hole in my ear. I am not getting that until all the piercings in both ears are completely healed. Even if it takes months.

Em suggested taking the subway to Central Park, yes I know, she is starting to scare me. We had lunch at AQ Kafé, I had Chicken salad, you know a salad with grilled chicken on it. It was fabulous. The place is definitely on our list of places to eat in the city. They also have a bakery there, that we looked at briefly, then quickly ran away. We went in the mall in Columbus Circle. The one with the huge naked couple. I mentioned to Em, that for a woman that size, her boobs are awfully small, and for a man that big his, um, well I’m sure you get the idea, she did! I got a skirt at Esprit (?), then we went to the park.

Then after the park we stopped at Talbots where Em found a dress on sale, then Annie Moore’s, she got chicken for Fred, then home. As soon as we got home, Tigger tried to take my book.

>Postcard Friendship Friday #29

>I didn’t see a new post on Marie’s blog and I don’t know where else to look for one. So I hope she doesn’t mind that I am doing this on my own sort of.

When I went to the Yankee store to get my shirt to wear to the Yankees game I went to Tuesday (which they won BTW, in case you haven’t been paying attention) I picked up some postcards featuring the Yankees and Yankee Stadium. I was going to start posting them this week (since I am completely infected with Yankee Fever). However, I received two lovely postcards from my friend Ló, who I met on the website Shelfari. We share a love of True Crime books. Unfortunately, it is hard for her to find them in Brazil, where she lives. Fortunately, I have little room for books where I live and love passing them on to people I know will read them. As a thank-you, she sent me this postcard of Brazil, São Paulo to be precise. The other one I will post next week.

And aren’t these stamps beautiful?

Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Founder of Special Olympics, Is Dead at 88

Eunice Kennedy Shriver, a member of one of the most prominent families in American politics and a trailblazer in the effort to improve the lives of people with intellectual disabilities died Tuesday morning. She was 88.

A sister of President John F. Kennedy and Senators Robert F. Kennedy and Edward M. Kennedy and the mother-in-law of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California, Mrs. Shriver never held elective office. Yet she was no stranger to Capitol Hill, and some view her work on behalf of the mentally retarded, including the founding of the Special Olympics, as the most lasting of the Kennedy family’s contributions.

>Week late

>I am behind on my blogging yet again. Summer seems to be a time when everything slows down, except giveaways. I have been getting e-mails for giveaways and it seems that I have no time for this blog. Not true.

First the giveaway, if you have never been to Bella is reading, and you like Philippa Gregory, make sure you stop by. I am running a giveaway for her new book, The White Queen.

Back to last Sunday, D and the kids went to a Star Trek convention in New Jersey. They were very excited because Leonard Nimoy was scheduled to be there and taking pictures with fans. Anyway, Em and I thought that since they were blowing off church to go to see Spock, we could blow off church to go to Manhattan. A while back, while I was reading Daryl’s blog and she mentioned the High Line (click here), I told Em I wanted to go there. She had heard about it also, but from another source (more about that later). So we went to the city and started the trek down to 20th Street and 10th Avenue. While walking along 10th Ave she mentions, “There’s Chelsea Piers.” We get to the High Line. It was threatening rain so not many people were there. There were a couple of nice men that welcomed us. There was much to take photos of.

(Yes, I am having fun with Picasa collage maker.)

Lots of indigenous plants and cool places to sit pretty neat over all.

It was then that I noticed that Em wasn’t taking pictures of the High Line. She was taking pictures off the High Line, toward the river. I asked her, “Are you taking pictures of Chelsea Piers?” One look at her face told me she was. Then when I caught up to her she asks, “What was that line Logan said to Barack?” Huh? “In ‘The Wee Small Hours’, when Logan and Barack come up here and Barack says the city is turning this into a park, what did Logan say?” Then I realized where she had heard of the High Line. From LOCI! These pictures are also in my slide show down on the right, along with pictures from the Today Show.
Then we walked uptown, thinking we would go to Central Park, but the weather had other ideas. It started to rain, and I do mean rain. We ended up taking a cab to Cafe Frida, where I discovered this wonderful Mexican Anisette Liqueur and Em had Flan. Then we went home. Cause we were soaked.

>Cool video

>My dad sent me this cool YouTube link. I decided to post the link instead of put the video here because I think you will enjoy it better if you can see it full screen. Here is what it is about:

This fun YouTube video features a 1980s pop classic. The rock band Toto scored their biggest hit with Africa in 1982. The song is instantly recognizable. But it has been reinvented.

Perpetuum Jazzile is an a cappella jazz choir from Slovenia. It’s hard to think of something further from an ‘80s rock band. But their version of Africa may best the original. The group has amazing voices.

But the beginning of this video is really striking. Group members simulate an African thunderstorm with their hands.

It’s really something to see and hear.(Don’t turn up your sound – the sound of raindrops begins really soft.)

>Feeling a little sad and sick

>I had all these things I was going to write about, all swimming around in my head. I came home and went to the gym. Was very proud of myself, then I went upstairs to heat my wax in the microwave and heard something on the news that made me sad and a little sick to my stomach.

I don’t know if any of you have heard about a woman who drove the wrong way on the Taconic, she had 5 children in her car and she hit a SUV. There were 3 people in the SUV, they all were killed. The woman and 4 of the children died. This happened July 26. What I heard tonight was the woman had a BAC of 1.6 and was smoking marijuana. If you want to read the article about it, the link is here.

>On Friday, 31 July 2009

>Em rode on the train with me. I was going to work, she was going ‘people watching’. I learned that there is enough time for me to get breakfast at Pershing Square and still get to work. Of course I wouldn’t do that on my own, only if someone rode to the city with me on the train. Have I mentioned that Pershing Square is the BEST place in NYC for breakfast? (Remember this is a BLOG and everything on here is my opinion) Have I told you why? I will have to come back to you on that, that has to be its own separate post. Next post I PROMISE.

I left work early to meet Em. She asked to meet at the new Sephora in Time Square. I met her coming out as I was walking toward the store. She had the silver and pink bag that was featured on the e-mail about the new store. She said it was too crowded there and she wanted to go to the other Sephora. She wanted her eyes done, as she is tired of what she does with them. So we go to Sephora and she asks somebody and they ask this little cute guy. He has Em sit on a stool, he has this high squeaky voice. When he goes to get something I ask Em if she noticed he was wearing eyeliner and his lashes were curled? Well her eyes looked fabulous after and we both spent some money there.

Tomorrow we are going to the city while the rest of the family goes to a Star Trek Convention. Leonard Nimoy is supposed to be there. Em and I are going to The High Line. Em also asked me to look up street fairs.

I found this website when we were down for the weekend with Gwen. SCHEDULE New York City Street Fairs and Festivals, so I went to it and found:
Sunday August 2nd ~ Festival of the Americas ~ (on 6th Avenue from 42nd – 56th Street)

Those are our plans. I hope to have pictures to post when we get home.
