>On a foggy September day in 1970, six-year-old Jens Davidsson leaves his house, climbs over a wall and disappears. Popular opinion is that he wandered down to the sea and drowned. This opinion is not shared by the boy’s mother and grandfather, each for their own reasons. 20 years later, it appears that they were right when the grandfather receives a package in the mail, a package that contains a little boy’s sandal.

The novel moves from present to past, telling us the history of a man some suspect as the killer and some believe has been dead at least 10 years before the boy disappeared. As the grandfather gets closer to the truth of what happened, his daughter renews her relationship with him, comes to grips with the disappearance of her son and both discover that some people are not at all what they appear to be.

The pace of this novel is good, a good foundation is laid with the characters and in true suspense thriller fashion, the ending is a twist.

>Lunch in Harlem

>kick-off for SEFA. This isn’t a restaurant, its a employee lunch room and I have to go now.

Fred got an 87 on his report card. D told me, then said, “I guess now I have to get him the I-pod thing he wants. He worked really hard to make it.” I asked if he wanted the Shuffle and D laughed, “No, he wants the I-touch, like Tigger has.” Speaking of Tigger, I told him I was just going to get my name on my I-Pod, “Bella”, he hates the name Bella, because of the Twilight books, I said, well I was Bella before the book so I am keeping it.

When I got home I found out I won a free book from the book giveaway website. How to eliminate pelvic pain. Big whop, maybe I will send it to my Mom.

I also signed up to follow Marie’s new craft blog. Go check it out, and I gave her the link to my craft blog.

I called the Doctor’s office about my prescription and my MRI, well, the Doctor hadn’t written anything in my chart. So they had to consult with him and were going to call, but haven’t yet. They did call in the Maxalt for my headaches, but I got tablets instead of the melt-away tablets. Should be all right.

Now I really have to go to bed. I am going to try to do one more thing before I do that.

>Should be in bed

>I watched the James Bond movie I borrowed. It was due Monday so now I have to pay a fine. The name of the movie is Casino Royale. I read more in my LibraryThing book on the train. And after the movie I finished Club Dead. I think I have them out of my system so I can read something else now.

Two only in New York moments, when I was walking to the subway, there was this girl/woman, wearing a black and white plaid coat, she was holding the color against her face to protect it from the wind, with gray pinstripe pants and pointy black heels, here is the New York minute, she was running across a 4 lane road in those heels! And here is the other NY minute, only in New York could it be too warm for a jacket, and the very next day, be too cold for the very same jacket!

>Internet problems

>I keep trying to get on WW my posts but I can’t. I think it is a problem with the website because I can get to my G-mail account and I just read Sarah’s blog. So for now I can’t see if anyone else has posted a message to me. I have to get lunch soon. I don’t know if I will get a sandwich or salad. I am tired of salad, it is too hot in here for soup. Maybe some Mac-n-cheese. Well gotta run.

I ended up getting a City Light, it is avocado, mozzarella cheese, tomato and olive oil. I don’t know if it is actually ‘light’ or not, but I kind of like it.

Em picked me up. She went to Mr. Mc retirement party. Someone where she works is causing a lot of trouble and bad times for her. Makes me mad.

When I got home, there was a package for me. I was surprised, it was the book from LibraryThing. The last book took so long to get here and this one so soon! I just finished Dewey so it is good timing.

This is from LibraryThing:

On a gray September day, on an island off the coast of Sweden, six -year -old Jens Davidsson ventured out of his backyard, walked out into a fog, and vanished…. Now twenty years have passed, and in this magnificent debut novel of suspense—a runaway bestseller in Sweden—the boy’s mother returns to the place where her son disappeared, drawn by a chilling package sent in the mail… In it, lovingly wrapped, is one of Jens’ sandals—sandals Julia Davidsson put on her son’s feet that very last morning. …

Now, with only a handful of clues, Julia and her father are questioning islanders who were present the day Jens vanished—and making a shocking connection to Öland’s most notorious murder case: the killing spree of a wealthy young man who fled the island and died years before Jens was even born. Suddenly the island that once seemed so achingly familiar turns strange and dangerous… Until Julia finds herself facing truths she never imagined—about what really happened on that September day twenty years ago, about who may have crossed paths with little Jens in the fog, and how a child could truly vanish without a trace…until now.

>And the winner is . . .

>
I know this is a little late, my excuses are: (1) its my first giveaway, (2) I went to Lake Placid that week, (3) I got a migraine in Lake Placid, or I was hungover for a week. Since I only had 3 beers, I am going with the migraine.

This is the giveaway of Hell Bent by William G. Tapply. I was actually reminded of this, I mean I never really forgot, maybe I should say I was spurred to action by the fact that I am getting another book.

Anyway, there is a service to random pick winners, but since I only got two entries, I just flipped a coin and the winner is . . . Carol!

>I just checked my Library Thing account and I am getting another book to review. Echoes from the Dead by Johan Theorin, it’s about a child that goes missing and sounds spooky, creepy good.

From Publishers Weekly

Set predominantly on the Baltic island of Öland, Theorin’s deeply disturbing debut will remind many of Henning Mankell both in its thematic intensity and dark tone. Two decades after the unsolved disappearance of a young boy, Jens Davidsson, who vanished one foggy autumn afternoon in 1972 and was presumed to have drowned, Jens’s grandfather, Gerlof, a retired sea captain, receives one of Jens’s sandals in the mail. Gerlof enlists his alcoholic daughter, Julia, who’s still struggling to come to grips with the loss of her only child, to help solve the mystery. All leads point to infamous thug Nils Kant, who was rumored to have killed numerous people. But Kant allegedly died years before the fateful day that Jens disappeared, so who could’ve killed the boy? And why? Further investigation leads the unlikely sleuths to some startling revelations about their isolated island community and its much-storied history.

>Training Today blech

>We had training today and it was blech, except for the desire to strangle Dilip whenever he opened his mouth. I was trying to listen to the instructor and he just wouldn’t shut up! I resisted of course cause I am here and not in custody. But soon I need to leave, actually, I should have already left. I just wanted to get this sent.

I have taken another step toward my move, I got a cell phone with the area code of where I am moving. I took my old phone and got some minutes on it and when you go online, you can get the area code of where you will be using the phone, so that’s what I did. I gave Em the number and she has been sending me text messages to the new number today because I was not at my computer all day.

Well, it is past time for me to be on my way. I am planning on working out tonight so I will be back when I am done. Oh one more thing, I finished The Scandal of the Season, it was O.K., just not my cuppa. The library sent me an e-mail that Dewey by Vicki Myron was in so I am going to stop to pick it up on my way home. It is not next on my list to read, next I am reading Double Bind, I have to read them quick so I can return them on time. I also just requested Casino Royale from the library because Sarah was talking about James Bond on her blog, so now I feel compelled to check out Daniel Craig as Bond.

I ended up not going to Allsport, I know I should have, but my throat is all filled up with crud and I just couldn’t work up the energy to. Tigger wanted some Spree, which I told him I would go out and get when I went to Allsport, since I didn’t go I had to think of something else. I went instead to get gas and it was $2.99 a gallon! I was so excited, I never thought that I would think of $2.99 for a gallon of gas a cheap price!

We got e-mails for our training in Lake Placid so I put the address of the hotel in my GPS tonight. Now I have to make sure to remember to check the car I get to be sure the cigarette lighter works.

>Late post

>Today has been one of those days. I kind of just wandered around and bugged people. It was National Boss Day, so I made sure to let people know that. I got a card and flowers, then I ended up giving the flowers to a co-worker because although I am no longer in a homicidal rage, I am still miffed. It didn’t help that he brought it up again today. Dude, just give it a rest.

Got some work done, went to lunch with some people, to a restaurant I won’t go to again. Ugh.

After work I stopped at the library to pay my fine and check out Double Bind and to see where on the list I am for Dewey. I am number 3. Then after I got home, I went to Allsport, Borders and Target. I almost bought a book I shouldn’t have at Borders, I resisted but I still want to get it. I got a black purse like my tan purse for winter, and I got a green tote bag that is a better size for taking my book to work.

I got a couple more songs by Coldplay, now Tigger wants me to send them to him. So I am off to do that.

>Tuesday Thingers

>This is the first time that I’ve participated in the Tuesday Thingers weekly question. Marie from The Boston Bibliophile hosts this fun meme.

Today’s question: Early Reviewers- do you participate? How many books (approximately) have you received through the program? Have you liked them generally? What’s your favorite ER book? Do you participate in the discussion group on LT?

I joined Early Reviewers in August of this year and got a book the first time out. I have just finished it and have not as yet written my review but will be before the weekend. I liked this book ‘Hell Bent’ by William G. Tapply but since I have only got one book I can’t answer the favorite question. I don’t usually participate in the discussion group.
